NCV

What is NCV?

In this test, small electrodes are placed on the skin over the nerve that is being tested. A mild electrical impulse is then applied to stimulate the nerve. The electrodes record how quickly and efficiently the electrical signal travels through the nerve to a muscle or another part of the nerve. The time it takes for the signal to travel and the strength of the signal are measured and compared to normal values.

The NCV test is often performed alongside an Electromyography (EMG) to provide a more complete picture of nerve and muscle function. While EMG measures the electrical activity of muscles, NCV focuses solely on nerve health.

Why is a NCV Done?

NCV are commonly recommended to:

  • Detects nerve damage or dysfunction
  • Diagnoses carpal or cubital tunnel syndrome
  • Evaluates diabetic peripheral neuropathy
  • Identifies nerve compression from injuries
  • Helps diagnose Guillain-Barré and similar disorders
  • Differentiates between muscle and nerve issues
  • Assesses nerve injury severity and location
  • Monitors nerve recovery after treatment
