Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic test used to assess the health and function of muscles and the nerve cells that control them (motor neurons). These nerve cells transmit electrical signals that cause muscles to contract. An EMG translates these signals into data that can help doctors detect neuromuscular abnormalities.
The test involves inserting very fine needles (electrodes) into specific muscles to record electrical activity. This activity is measured when the muscle is at rest and during contraction. A related test, called a nerve conduction study (NCS), is often performed alongside EMG. In this part, small electrical pulses are applied to the skin to measure how quickly and strongly the nerves send signals.
EMG are commonly recommended to:

An EMG is recommended if you're experiencing unexplained muscle weakness, numbness, tingling, cramping, or chronic pain. It helps diagnose conditions like peripheral neuropathy, radiculopathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, ALS, and muscular dystrophy.
EMG may involve slight discomfort, as it requires inserting very fine needles into specific muscles. However, the pain is generally minimal and temporary. Many patients describe it as a pinching or pressure sensation.
You should wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being tested. Avoid applying lotions or oils on your skin before the test. Inform your doctor about any medications you're taking, as some may affect the test results.
EMG is generally safe. Minor side effects include slight bruising or soreness at the needle insertion sites, which usually resolves quickly. Serious complications are rare.
